Floor Aftercare: prolonging the life of your floors finish
Having invested in your newly restored / sanded floor it's well worth looking after the finish so that it lasts and maintenance is the key to the lasting beauty of your floor.
Warning! High heels and pets can be dangerous in combination with softwood floors.

Although the floor is walk dry after 3 hours, the floor lacquer will take two weeks to cure 100%, so:

Be gentle when moving back furniture.
Attach felt protectors under all furniture.
Wait for 72 hours before replacing door mats area rugs.
If possible avoid moving any heavy furniture back into the room for the first 72 hours.
Avoid using water or any cleaner for the first two weeks.
Avoid heavy foot traffic.
Place mats at the exterior and interiors of front and back doors to help prevent the tracking of grit, dirt and sand.
When moving heavy furniture, protect your wooden floors by slipping a piece of cloth or blanket under the legs.
Always place mats and throw rugs at doorway exteriors and interiors to prevent the tracking of grit, dirt and sand which can damage your new wood floor.
Wipe up food and other spills immediately with a dry or slightly dampened towel (wipe dry).
Keep your pets nails trimmed no matter how large or small your pet is. Pets with long nails can scratch and dull the floor finish requiring additional maintenance or premature recoating. Pet urine will turn wood black and not sand out. Install proper floor protectors on furniture. Protectors (Felt type protectors are recommended) will allow chairs to move easily over the floor without scuffing. Clean or replace the protectors on a regular basis to remove any grit that may have become embedded on protectors. Keep high heels of shoes in good repair. An unprotected tip will dent any wooden floor.
No maintenance or cleaning products should be applied until 2 weeks after the wood floor has been lacquered. Do not use water to clean wood floors, always use a recommended cleaner.
Never use vinyl or tile floor care products on wood floors, they can cause the floor to become slippery and appear dull.
Place mats and throw rugs at doorway exteriors and interiors to help prevent the tracking of grit and dirt on your wood flooring.
Never wet-mop a wood floor. Standing water can stain or damage the wood. Wipe up food and other spills immediately with a slightly dampened towel. Place soft plastic or fabric faced glides under the legs of furniture to prevent scratching of your wood floor.
When moving heavy furniture, completely pick it up rather than sliding it across the floor to best protect your wood flooring.
Try not to let people walk on the wood floor with stiletto-healed shoes as these can cause damage.
In the kitchen place a rug in front of the sink area. Use a humidifier in the winter months to keep the movement of wood to a minimum.
Dust mop, sweep or vacuum your wood floor regularly. Clean with manufacturers recommended cleaner. Re-coat the wood floor when cleaning no longer restores shine. The frequency of this will depend on the amount of traffic.
A part acrylic seal should last 4-6 years.
A high traffic seal should last 6-9 years, oil will need touching up once every couple of years, if not sooner.
These timings are approximate and depend on the volume of traffic and the type of shoes that go over the floor.
If you really want your floors to last you might consider making the house a shoe-free zone!
If you have plans to decorate your rooms, it is advised to do this after we have sanded & finished your floors. Any work which may involve needing access to beneath your floor should be done before i.e. plumbing and electrical
The floor sanding machines we use are the most efficient on the market for performance dust collection and they all have built in vacuums to minimise dust.
Yes, floor sanding is reasonably noisy. All our floor sanding team wear ear defenders and face masks. If you live in a flat or semi-detached property it may be worth while informing your neighbours.
Yes. We have wide range of stains to choose from. Test patches can be applied to your floor for you to view and make a choice.
Yes please. If this is not possible the room will have to be done in two half's rotating the furniture. This method will be charged at a higher rate.

Unless you have plans to restore a fire place we can chase out the concrete hearth. We then uplift the surrounding floor boards and relay filling the void left by the concrete hearth with reclaimed pine floor boards which are secured nailed or glued.
Gap filling can be done in a few ways. One is to mix resin with wood dust into a paste, this is then pushed into the gaps between the floorboards and left before sanding flush. The second method is to glue wood slivers made up from reclaimed pine wood into the gaps between the floorboards and the sand flush.
We would recommend filling the gaps in ground floor rooms and hallways as there could be a cold draft. In kitchens and bathrooms gap filling is recommended as a protection against spillage. We do not recommend wood fillers that are available in high street shops as they tend to shrink and fall through or get sucked out with the vacuum cleaner.
On an average size room of around (12ft x 12ft) to include sanding and staining will take a couple of days
This is a job we would not recommend you undertake if you are a novice. We have stained hundreds of floors and our professional staff knows how to deal with any job. We have also seen a lot of floors that have been badly stained and it’s not a pretty picture. When a floor is stained well it has a beautiful even colour with depth to it. Stained badly and it can look patchy and dull with a dirty appearance. If you would like to see some examples of our work so you can see a floor they we have stained recently, give us a call and we can try to arrange a viewing in your area. For more information please check out our page on the Floor Sanding Process.
We only use skilled and trusted workmen who have been working within our company for years. We are a family run business and work well as a team.
Apart from looking beautiful, they are hygienic, easy to clean and beneficial to asthma suffers and people with dirt allergy. They do not harbour dust mites found in carpets and are a must for any one with kids and pets.
Yes, dust mites are responsible for many allergies and need carpets and soft furnishings to live in. Floor boards are ideal for asthma sufferers because they can be easily cleaned and rugs can be washed and hung out to dry in the sun which kills dust mites. Dust mites are invisible to the naked eye, but just in case you would like to see what one looks like under a microscope.
